Bluemont, a leading Australian distributor of mobile solutions for fire and flood has taken exclusive distribution rights to Iconos nozzle hoses.

A nozzle hose is a mobile water curtain to be compared with a water wall nozzle but is more flexible and adaptable. The water wall provided by the hose can reach up to 15 metres in height. It has a major extinguishing capacity independent of personnel with up to 25 stainless steel nozzles possible. The product is made in Germany and is supplied in 20 meter lengths, has different nozzle inserts and hose diameters from 25mm to 110 mm. Even with strong side winds the water curtain keeps it shape. The hose is made of chemical resistant material and steel and is of a large diameter. It can be deployed in straight or curved formation and underground as well. Water pressure stabilises the hose in the desired position and it is simple and fast to assemble.

Water flow is possible between 20 and 60 liters/minute. Its applications among others are forest fires, industrial fires, waste dump fires and it absorbs vapours e.g. to contain odours at landfill and can absorb dangerous suspended gasses in industrial usage. It can be used in fire prevention as it cools and wets objects, can be used for dust suppression for mining, and can be used for decontamination and disinfection of objects and vehicles. Required water pressure for deployment of the nozzle hose is between 400kPa and 1800kPa.

The CFA used the Hytrans Hoselayer from CFA Scoresby Fire Station at Somerton, Victoria to deploy 3 lays of large 100 mm diameter hoses to fight a waste pile fire. At 2.30am on November 20th 2015 the waste pile was struck by lightning and caught fire. The towering mound of wood and other possibly noxious materials threatened to burn for multiple days and cause significant air pollution for nearby communities. It was estimated to be 20 metres high by 80 metres wide and had been operated illegally with the EPA and the City of Hume Council pursuing the owners through the courts in preceding months. Large amounts of water were needed to extinguish the fire, and the hoselayer quickly deployed a total of 2,300 m of large diameter 100 mm hose. Powered by multiple fire brigade units over 12,000 lit/min water were pumped to the site to feed aerial and other monitors for 7 days. The CFA sourced water from hydrants on the other side of the Hume Highway across from the blaze, a considerable distance from the fire, so the many lengths of large diameter hose were essential .

27th November 2015
The State Government of North Rhine-Westphalia is procuring 6 special fire trucks equipped with Hytrans High Volume Water Supply System units. Each district government in the state and the National Firefighting Training Institute in Munster will get one, 6 in total. The modules consist of a hook lift truck on which a Hytrans Mobile High Volume Water Supply System is mounted with a hose layer and a hose pick up system. The total truck when loaded weighs approximately 24 tonnes and can travel through high water to be used for flood mitigation also. The trucks are 420 HP, have 8 tyres each and extra high frames. The Emmerich volunteer fire service will deploy the new truck for the Duesseldorf district. Four people from the Emmerich service and a representative from the Kleve district fire service went to Lemmer in the Netherlands for training and instruction with the new unit.
Very large diameter hoses for delivery of enormous volumes of water
There are many storage compartments in the Hytrans units including one containing the pump unit with a super high delivery volume of up to 8,000 litres per minute. There is a 2,000 metre long hose with a huge diameter of 152mm / 6”. Normal B fire hoses generally used for water delivery have a diameter of 75mms. The Hytrans is transported on the truck and brought to the deployment site where it can be used to deliver water from open water sources such as the Rhine River.
In Emmerich the system has already been deployed before in a fire at an old freight train station in 2007. The B hoses first used there were not satisfactory for that fire but when the Hytrans was deployed the fire was stopped within 20 minutes. The specialist systems were called in from Duisburg and the Netherlands back then.
Hytrans system will be used in practical exercises on the Rhine
The Hytrans system will now be used in big fires on the lower Niederrhein and in Bocholt. It will also be good for flood situations. The system can pump water away again over long distances – eg up and over a dike. The trained fire personnel will show other staff in the spring how the system works if they wish to practise with the system on the Rhine.
Hytrans Fire System used by FDNY
The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) currently also uses the same HFS high performance water delivery module for fires.

Special fire trucks with high volume pumps and more access points along the tracks will enhance safety along the new 78 kilometer freight railway line from Oberhausen to the Netherlands border at Emmerich.

Part of the new safety plan for the Betuwelijn are new Hytrans Fire System pumps mounted on cross terrain fire trucks each with up to 4 kms of hose. Units such as these are already in place in the towns of Emmerich and Duisburg but more will be acquired and stationed along the new freight line where it passes communities. The federal government will foot the bill according to the German Minister for the Environment Barbara Hendricks of the SPD party. North Rhine-Westphalia Transport Minister Michael Groscheck emphasized the economic benefits of the track for the state and Ronald Pofalla from the German Federal Railway maintained that all parties were in agreement now about the project. However Thomas Verbeet, the Fire Chief of the town of Wesel spoke of a ‘forced compromise’ intended to have the matter settled before the summer break and Sabine Weiss the CDU party MP for Wesler said that only when all fire authorities in all the communities along the track voted for the plan would it be agreed to. When further questioned about what she had meant by ‘all parties’ being in agreement The Minister for the Environment Hendricks said she meant the Federal Government, The State Government as well as the town of Oberhausen.
